IVA (Individual Vehicle Approval) Test
All vehicles less than 10 years old that are to be imported from outside of the EEC into the UK must be examined by the governments specialist VOSA department.
Generally the work entails indicator light and side light modifications and general tidying up of the wiring, some centres are stricter than others.
Quite a few newer models are appearing with LED lights and Body Control Modules (Computerised Electronics) which control the lights, this can create a much more expensive light conversion, we are now authorised for the supply of these control units.
We are happy to undertake this work for you and can arrange for the collection of your vehicle from the docks by secure trunker and delivery to our technicians to undertake the work.
If your vehicle is more than 3 years old it will require an MOT test, usually we have this test carried out prior to the IVA, to ensure that your vehicle is fully compliant with this test.
Your vehicle will then be transported by trailer to the IVA centre, at all times our engineer will remain with the vehicle whilst the test is being carried out, and in the event of minor anomalies, then he will be able to correct this onsite without a retest.
Once your vehicle has passed this test, we can if required complete the registration process, fit number plates and return your vehicle fully road legal.
Should you wish to discuss an IVA Test with our Engineer, then please call us in the first instance and we will put you in contact with him
IVA Application and guidance forms can be obtained from our Forms Page.
Please note, the SVA Test was changed to an IVA Test Between February and June 2009.
MOT Conversion
Some vehicles don’t have to take an MOT test. These include:
- tractors
- goods vehicles powered by electricity
- any vehicle less than 3 years old
- cars and motorbikes made before 1960
A full list of currently exempt vehicles is on form V112. You need to fill in the form to tax your vehicle if it is exempt.
The key differences to the casual observer are that in the States that the rear indicators flash intermittently with the brake lights and the indicators are red.
Generally speaking US vehicles do not have Side Repeaters on the front wings, in addition they usually show an amber side light at the front instead of white, quite a few American cars do not have a Fog Light.
Vehicles first used on or after 1 April 1986 must have side repeaters fitted.
A rear fog lamp is required to be fitted to the centre or offside of vehicles first used on or after 1 April 1980.
Passenger and dual purpose vehicles with no more than 8 passenger seats and with 4 or more wheels first used before 1 January 1965 are exempt from having seat belts fitted.
Flashing indicators on cars become legal in 1954
All new cars must have flashing turn indicators from 1st September 1965
